100 km megatube under Geneva joins the club with CERN collider

A 100km long megatube known as FCC (future circular collider) is proposed by the European Union to join the club of LHC, under Geneva. This is another endeavour of human quest for knowing how the universe came into existence.

A decade earlier, the particle accelerator, LHC was proposed, which collides protons and other Sub-Atomic Particles almost at the speed of light. When these particles smash each other, their debris so formed consist of even smaller entities which exist only for a fraction of seconds, but they tell us a lot about the origin of everything. The biggest achievement of LHC was the discovery of God particle (higgs-boson), which was theorised almost half a century before. Peter Higgs hypothesised that there must be something which gives mass to matter, and he said this Higgs field consisting of higgs-boson particles is the reason behind this. And this discovery confirmed his hypothesis and got him nobel prize for physics in 2013.

A similar project has been proposed recently by the European Union, and is expected to be functional till 2036-40. This project would cost 9 billion euros for initial implementation and later 15 billion euros. But the final decision is expected to come till 2020, and it would take next 20 years for the machine to be formed. This new machine known as FCC, would be almost 4 times in size and 10 times powerful than the LHC. With such a huge size and power, it is expected to dig further deeper into the mysteries of universe and quantum physics and unravel much more than what's known at current.

However, a few other countries like China, Japan and US, are already in the race of implementing such projects. China has plans for its own 100 km long collide, but haven't confirmed it yet. Similarly, Japan is also expected to take a decision on a linear collider till March. These decisions would also affect the final decision on FCC, or another project of a compact linear collider
