WhatsApp is banning 2 million accounts every month and will ban yours too
The Facebook owned instant messaging app has become one of the world's largest social media companies, with over 1.5 billion users across the globe. Its biggest user base is in India with more than 200 million active users. These figures are expected to grow even further, as technology is becoming cheaper day by day.
However, WhatsApp has been also facing challenges of its platform being misused by many people. These include misinformation, child pornography, fake news, spam and many more. Whatsapp has been struggling to curb these types of misuse of its platform and stop sharing of such abusive contents.
On Wednesday, the company published a paper to make its users aware that it understands how to fight these challenges and what steps it is taking to control them. It has revealed that over the last three months, it has banned 2 million accounts per month. When the company bans an account, it has a team to review and respond to the user's appeal. The team asks for several additional information from the user in order to regain access to their account. The eleven page document explains that it bans accounts at three stages: at registration, while messaging and in response to the user reports.
Blocking at registration: While registering on WhatsApp, you are asked to enter a one-time code sent to your number to make sure of your identity. WhatsApp also checks whether this number has been recently used for any abusive purpose, or the computer network used in the process has some suspicious activity on it.
Blocking while messaging: Even if you somehow manage to pass through the registration process, whatsaap will keep a track of your activity on its app. For instance, if someine try to send over 100 messages in 15 seconds within 5 minutes of registration, it will ban the account permanently. Also, if you try to create dozens of groups just minutes after registration, or if you try to add thousands of people to some existing group, it may also result in your account being seized.
If you receive messages from someone which doesn't show the typing indicator, it is best to block that number, as it can be a spam. Also sharing abusive content or any suspicious link will lead in banning your account.
Blocking in response to negative feedback of user: If an account has received certain number of blocks or negative feedbacks from other users, then WhatsApp will also ban that account.
