Google maps AR Navigation introduced : soon to be released for select users

Google had introduced a new augmented reality mode in Google maps in the previous year. The feature overlays arrows, landmarks, maps and possibly even an animated creature showing the way in camera view with real-time environment around the user. The feature has been in testing since its announcement, and now the company has finally revealed it to be released to a few local guides, i.e advanced Google map users. However, the company will commercially launch it only when it is completely satisfied with its usability.
The Google maps app will have a dedicated option to switch to the AR mode, which after enabling, opens the camera and starts analysing your surrounding environment using street view data. The feature superimposes the arrows onto the real world to lead you where you're supposed to go. It also gets activated automatically if you hold your phone upright so that your camera could capture the real world around you.
It will also display a safety message saying "For your safety, keep your phone down while you walk", as its distraction may cause accidents.
This feature can become a milestone in the use of augmented reality for navigation purpose. It will be more useful if it could be used hands-free, just like AR glasses or the car screen. However, we can't expect it to be launched any sooner, as the company has already cleared that it will be released commercially and will be made available only after the company is satisfied with its usability after testing.
