Intel launches its flagship processor with 28 Cores and 56 Threads for $2,999
Intel has finally launched its latest flagship processor Xeon W-3175X with 28 Cores and 55 threads, which was first announced by the company at Computex back in June 2018. With its latest addition, Intel targets to take on the AMD's 32 core Ryzen thteadripper 2950WX and claims a better single-thread as well as multi-thread performance. It had announced then unnamed 28 core CPU that will run at 5GHz,but soon it was found out that the company was using a heavy industrial cooler with overclocking.
The new flagship is aimed at professional content creators with heavy multi-thread workloads like industrial design, cinema quality videos and effects rendering, game development, etc. It offers the highest core count, memory capacity, PCIe bandwidth - currently available in any of the Intel's desktop processors. The X in the model's name clearly indicates that it is unlocked and is fully overclockable, unlike any other CPU in the Xeon family.
It has a base frequency of 3.1GHz across all Cores and a maximum of 4.3GHz single core turbo boost. It has 38.5 MB cache memory and has a support for upto 68 PCIe 3.0 lanes. It supports upto 512GB of ECC enabled DDR4-2666 RAM, spread across six channels. It is based on the Skylake-SP architecture used in the Xeon family.
Despite being a Xeon CPU, it will also work in single socket configuration, but uses the workstation-grade LGA3647 socket on motherboards with C621 chipset. Its TDP rating is 255W.
Its consumer price is set at $2,999. The first compatible motherboard to be announced - the Asus ROG Dominus Extreme - is aimed at enthusiasts and overclockers. For cooling, Intel has worked with Asetek for a custom all-in-one liquid cooler, which will support overclocking.
